I never realized that owning a residence is such a large liability. Of course I was totally mindful of the month to month bond payment, the water power bills, the garden services etc, but I never in my wildest dreams imagined that maintaining the interior of the home would also be a 24 hour 7 days per week responsibility!
This weekend “operation new kitchen” will start! I am among those typical ladies who feel that you can never have sufficient drawers or shelves and our current kitchen area is missing both! I must also add that the kitchen was set up about a century ago and other than being unsightly it still contains steel cupboards which have now started to rust!
If you are ever looking at redesigning your kitchen area, you could possibly can learn from my experience (and mistakes):
Having a general idea of the dimensions of the kitchen is not sufficient! You must have exact sizes before you start obtaining quotes for cupboards, shelves, new ovens and floor tiles! The very last thing you want is being stuck with kitchen cabinets that don’t fit into your kitchen, or on the other hand, wide open gaps between your cupboards! There are numerous ways to improvise and upgrade an eye-catching kitchen area, but without proper measurements that would not be achievable!
Take into account where your current sink and taps are. Ultimately you would want the new kitchen’s kitchen sink to be in the same location as your old sink, as this would mean that you won’t need to move the taps, piping etc. Once more there are so many various models and sizes of sinks available that you are almost guaranteed to find a setup what would work beautifully with your current structure.
It’s the same for your power outlets. Keep in mind that your oven and stove will need to be hooked up again. If you install your new hob and oven, consider where your power outlets are to minimize unnecessary cabling and electrical power issues.
In case you have an existing stove and/or hob, measure this precisely! Most hobs and stoves are only available in standard dimensions, but in the event that you own a customized hob or stove you will not manage to fit this into standard kitchen cupboard layouts. Make sure that you have the width, height and depth at hand prior to trying to find quotes on new units.
Many kitchens have tiled floors. This is a thing that you must take into account when looking around at new kitchen cupboards. Ideally the new cabinets should have the same depth as the current cabinets (or deeper) to prevent gaps in the floor tiles. If you are planning on getting new floor tiles in any case, then this is of course not something that you have to worry about.
Keep in mind that most pantry shelves and shelves are supplied as an empty shell. It is important to also get quotes on the cupboard doors and tops if this is not part of the “do it yourself package”.
Happy remodeling! I hope your new kitchen area provides you with hours of cooking and entertainment pleasure!
